CS4 - New tapeless workflow

A while back I was awe-struck with Red’s Announcement that there would be a new plug-in that would allow for a RAW 4k Workflow with-in my favorite suite of products!  Well there’s been a long lapse of time from that announcement and there have been a few more “announcements” from Adobe regarding their latest release to the Creative Suite Family (CS4 - if you’re living under a rock has been announced.)

There are many people that are talking about it - so I’m not going to add to that noise, check out the source for all of your news needs…  But only on thing that I’m rather taken back with all of this news hype, people scrambling to get their hands on tutorials so that they are ready for Mid October (when CS4 is said to be shipping, also note that if you buy CS3 now - you’ll receive CS4 when it ships! But I digress…)

In all of the updates that we all want to discover and learn how to use - there’s talk about the new tape less work flow, and there has been mention of RED’s R3D but nothing that I’ve seen has officially listed R3D on the list.

I know that there was always a lot of talk of CS4 being the answer for all of these - as it would allow 64 bit support for more memory (needed when cutting 4k footage!).  But I recall that there was CS3 support promised for R3D Support.  So what am I missing…  Adobe’s not really talking about RED other than at the first live event for CS4 - no official mentions on their site, as if to say that it’s not a reality - yet.

Well I guess time will tell, and the new tapeless workflow will lend itself to this addition when it’s ready!!! But I really hope that’s at time of release.

This is a labor of love, if you enjoy what you're reading - help me out, keep me awake for a while.

RED is quiet because the rethink of Scarlet depends on Adobe providing a simple post workflow that is priced at the Scarlet end of the market. It’s a bit chicken and egg between the 2 - Adobe wants the potentially vast Scarlet user group - RED wants people to be able to afford to edit .r3d (that almost precludes Apple as a decent Mac is priced 4x that of a PC)

I can see the Chicken & Egg dynamic in full effect - but RED does have the API working in their favor - it seems that they have Avid (and eventually FCP) going to be able to cut R3D natively (eventually) and I agree one is point less and the other over priced (You decide which!) I do however - really wish that they would at least acknowledge it in print.

I guess the really funny thing that came to me - is the reality that this is all in the hope that I can actually afford the Scarlet when it comes down the pipe. It would give me some sort of peace to know that I could cut it if I could afford it! But with the shake up over at RED and these new camera (5DmkII and D90) coming of age - the only thing that is clear, “NAB IS GOING TO ROCK THIS YEAR!”

PaulDV and I were talking before “Hero’s” started - Stu brings up some really good food for thought regarding their form factor via his blog: http://prolost.blogspot.com/2008/09/what-should-movie-camera-look-like.html

I think that I would shoot with a camera like that - if it was affordable and delivered the look and file type that would be easy to work with - (sorry AVCHD is not looking to be that for me…) But I’m also okay with being wrong - if I can be right when the cash needs to be on the table!
